The Republicans finally elected a Speaker of the House on Friday night or I guess Saturday morning. Oddly enough, Speaker Nancy Pelosi was elected with two fewer votes than Kevin McCarthy was.

The 2023 Texas legislative session opened Jan. 10, with property taxes, gun control and the power grid expected to be among the top issues on the agenda.

Capital Highlights Massive flight cancellations by Southwest Airlines during the Christmas holiday week are prompting the federal government to look into why thousands of travelers were left stranded across the country, along with huge piles of luggage in airports served by the beleaguered airline. Transportation Secretary PeteButtigiegsaidhisagency would examine what caused Southwest’s widespread cancellations, which began as a massive polar storm gripped much of the country a few days before Christmas.

I am a college football fan. So in a way, News Year’s is the day that I look forward to. I became a football fan in 1964. Prior to that I never really had a lot of interest. We did not have a television so I did not grow up watching football on TV. My dad’s idea of going to a ball game was driving by and dropping me off at the stadium. We lived about a mile or two from Rancier Junior High and the Killeen High School stadium was right behind the junior high. Even in a military town like Killeen, things were pretty safe and a mile or two was nothing for a young man like myself, so I would hike home after the game.

Time is flying. I certainly did not plan to be back at work this fall, but when duty calls it is a privelige to answer that call. To be honest, I am not sure how this happened. I was preparing to go to the Silsbee versus Jasper football game one Friday.

A long-awaited state report concludes most pregnancy-related deaths in Texas in 2019 were preventable and disproportionately affected Black women. The report, issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Committee, indicated deaths were mainly attributable to hemorrhage, mental health conditions and blood clots.
